History around Lower Pitcalnie

At ' Lower Pitcalnie ' itself, there was an Inn in 1900, one of three local Inns. Only one is still trading. It is not clear if the house was the Inn, but it could be old enough. However, it was extensively renovated in 1972, with more recent refurbishment. The en-suite rooms were established in 1998.

The area around Lower Pitcalnie is steeped in history....

Lower Pitcalnie is located on the Pictish Trail which takes in several items of Pictish historical interest including, in Portmahomack the Tarbat Discovery Centre, a Pictish archaeology centre.
In Nigg, you can see Nigg Old Church with its Cholera Stone and Standing Stone (now protected inside). Further North from Nigg you can visit Fearn Abbey.
Near by is the village of Tain - the oldest Royal Borough in Scotland and its charter dates back to 1066. The Tain Through Time exhibition is well worth a visit!

Travel north to visit Golspie and wander round beautiful Dunrobin Castle and find out about its fascinating history - including its part in the Highland Clearances of old.
Further north again (and off the map) includes Helmsdale which is home to Time Span - an exhibition dedicated to Highland History, from Picts and Vikings to present day activities. Helmsdale also has a history involving Gold. You can still try your luck panning for gold!
South of Nigg is the village of Cromarty. Here you can find the Cromarty Courthouse Museum - spanning seven centuries of local history. Also in Cromarty is Hugh Miller's Cottage - telling the story of this remarkable local character.
